7

Objective of Activity/Drill

Teaches transition, communication, and finishing the shot. Every player is within a maximum of 20 yards from her goal. There should be many shots and rebounds. You can also discover hidden keeper talent or give field players a new appreciation for keepers.

8

Describe Set-Up

Place four or six players in the middle and one player at each of the exterior lines of the square.
Divide the middle players into two teams. All middle players must remain in the grid.
Two outside players on either side of the square are assigned to one team, and the other two outside players on the opposite sides of the square are assigned to the other team.
The outside players must remain outside of the square and only on their line.
An outside player starts the game by passing to one of her players.
The team scores with a successful pass to the outside player on the other side of the grid.

9

Explain Activity/Drill

Other rules: The ball can be passed back to the outside player who first served the ball, but does not count as a goal. Encourage the back pass because the outside player should always be open. If one team gains possession and can successful pass the ball to one end, then a point is scored with the ball being successfully passed to the other end player. A successful pass means the outside player gains complete control of the ball. Once the ball goes out of play, send a new ball to an outside player, giving each outside player an opportunity for an entry pass. The first pass can be free if you are having trouble staring the game. The outside players cannot stand with the ball, but must move it along the line.

Inside players offense: Back passing; finding space in a close area; shielding; communication; vision and movement with and without the ball.

Inside players defense: Marking and not ball watching; communication and help defense; and decision making on double teams.

Outside players offense: Moving without the ball; communication; anticipation; creating passing lanes; proper passing to space and under opposition. Outside players will want to stand on the line and watch. Make sure they are moving and providing passing opportunities.

Outside defense: communication and anticipation.

Switch players in and out of the middle.

Build up: Outside players now become keeper-sweepers. The lines off the square indicate goals. The middle players are still restricted to the square, only now the O players are shooting on the X goals and vis-versa. The area between the goal and the line of the square is the keeper-sweepers area and she cannot be defended in this area. While controlling the ball in this area, the keeper-sweeper must keep the ball moving and cannot stand the wait for an opening.

10

Explain Coaching Points

Keep several balls by each keeper and when the balls go out of bounce immediately send in a new ball. There should be a lot of fast and furious scoring. Switch keepers and middle players in and out.
