ACT - Advanced Competition Teams
Tournament Play in Addition to Regular Season
ACT stands for Advanced Competition Teams. ACT is the next level up from regular season soccer and is in addition to the regular season. ACT teams are competitive teams selected through open tryouts, and play in tournaments before and after the regular season. ACT players also remain on their regular season teams for both the Fall and Spring seasons. This program provides an outlet for players who want the opportunity to participate at a more competitive level of soccer while enjoying the benefits of the AYSO philosophy:
Everyone Plays
Players who are selected for the team get to play at least half of each game; we don't have "starters" and "benchers."
Balanced Teams
The tryout and selection process is geared so that all teams in a division will be competitive.
Open Registration:
Players are selected for the teams based on objective analysis of their ability by AYSO Advanced Coaches.
Positive Coaching:
ACT Teams are coached by AYSO Advanced Coaches who adhere to our coaching philosophy.
Good Sportsmanship:
ACT Teams represent AYSO and practice and play exhibiting the same great sportsmanship you find in the rest of the region.
Player Development:
ACT Teams support our philosophy of Player Devleopment by giving accomplished players a challenging environment in which to continue growing.
Tryouts are usually held in October, and are open to all players who are registered within the Region 104 program and have played at least 60% of the games at the time of tryout. The tryouts schedule, and other information on tryouts, is posted on the tryouts tab, and tryouts will also be publicized for at least two regular season games at the game fields.
ACT teams usually play tournaments in November, February, May and sometimes June. ACT teams are allowed to practice on Sunday afternoons during regular season, and twice a week before and after the regular season.
Some fundraising is necessary to meet tournament, uniform and team expenses. Each coach determines the tournaments that the team will play, and the fundraising requirements for the team. AYSO fundraisers include pictures and trophy sales. Other fundraising may be required, depending on the number and location of tournaments the coach plans to play, and the amount of equipment and/or uniform accessories the coach plans. Prior to trying out, parents should check with the coach to determine the number and location of tournaments planned and the fundraising that will be required. Trying out for and accepting a position on an ACT team is a commitment to the retirements of the team.
Coaching an ACT Team
Coaching in the ACT program is by application only. Prospective ACT coaches must be Intermediate Certified and approved by the Board. If you are interested in being an ACT coach, you will find more information on the "Coaching" tab.
Questions?
If you have questions or would like more information you can contact the ACT Commissioner.
ACT Coach Information
Application Required
ACT coaches must be approved by the Region 104 Board. For U9 and U10, ACT coaches must be have completed the Intermediate Coaching Course. ACT coaches at U11 and above must be Advance Certified (or be Intermediate Certified and have a plan in place to complete the Advance Course at the appropriate time). To be considered for Board approval, coaches must submit an application with two letters of recommendation. The application is simply a letter or email stating the applicant’s interest and request for approval to coach an ACT team in a specified age group. It should also include a brief statement of the applicant’s experience, licensure or certifications, and goals for the team. The letters of recommendation must be from the parent of a player that the applicant has coached in the past year. These materials should be sent to the ACT Commissioner, and must be received and complete no later than three business days prior to the regular September Board meeting. You can email them to the ACT Commissioner at ACT@ayso104.org. Only complete applications will be submitted to the Board for approval at the regular September meeting.
If you are approved as an ACT coach, you will first meet with the other ACT coaches and the Commissioner to review ACT and AYSO policies and procedures, and then, (collectively with any other ACT coaches in your age group/division) plan and implement your tryouts. Tryouts should take place in October. Tournament play can begin in November, so applications and all other team paperwork must be completed, and uniforms obtained, in a timely manner.
